This is the third book in the Jean and Pat Abbot series and set in San Francisco. Having written this one in 1942, Crane brings in interesting facts about the early WWII experience in one of the states closest to Japan. I liked THE GOLD BOX better which is the second in the series and is set in Illinois and includes racial conflict as understood in 1941. But I am hooked now and cannot wait for the next book in the series to come. Nice, light mystery reading with interesting characters and plot. Fans of mysteries written in the pre-war and war years of the 30's and 40's will probably like this series.
